Colorado Gold Claims for Sale
Colorado produced enormous quantities of gold during its Victorian-era mining booms, and the mountains of the Central Rockies still contain significant unexplored and underworked ground. Lode gold dominates in the high country, with placer deposits scattered across drainages descending from productive ranges.
Geology
Colorado gold is predominantly associated with Tertiary epithermal and porphyry systems emplaced during Laramide and mid-Tertiary magmatic events. The Colorado Mineral Belt, a northeast-trending zone of intrusive stocks and breccia pipes, hosts the most productive districts. Placer gold in mountain drainages reflects concentration of lode gold eroded from these systems.
Mining Districts
Major producing districts include Cripple Creek and Victor in Teller County, the San Juan Mountains districts centered on Silverton and Ouray, the Central City and Black Hawk district in Gilpin County, and the South Park placer area in Park County. Cripple Creek was one of the world's great gold camps and produced over 21 million troy ounces.
BLM and Land Access
The BLM Colorado State Office manages public land across the state, though much of the best gold country falls within U.S. Forest Service jurisdiction. The Grand Junction Field Office and the Royal Gorge Field Office cover areas with placer potential. High-elevation claims have short operational seasons and require 4WD access.
Season and Access
Colorado mining season at elevation is compressed: typically mid-June through September at claims above 10,000 feet. Lower elevation placer areas in the Front Range foothills can be worked from April through November. Early season high water can limit access to creek placer workings.
